Terms of Service

Last updated: September 2, 2026

Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of CiteLite at getcitelite.com, including the citation generators, bibliography tools, and educational articles. By accessing or using CiteLite, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

The Service

CiteLite is a free tool that formats citations in APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, and Chicago 17th edition (author-date) styles, and provides educational guidance on related conventions such as Harvard-style author-date referencing. You may assemble a session bibliography and export citations for your own academic or professional use. The service is provided as-is, without accounts and without server-side storage of your drafts.

Eligibility and Accounts

You do not need an account to use CiteLite. You are responsible for ensuring that your use complies with the laws of your jurisdiction and with your school or employer's academic integrity policies.

Accuracy Disclaimer

While we strive for formatting accuracy, generated citations and educational summaries are provided without warranty of any kind. Official style manuals contain edge cases, change between editions, and are interpreted differently by instructors and journals. You are solely responsible for verifying every citation against the APA Publication Manual, MLA Handbook, Chicago Manual of Style, your institution's Harvard guide (when applicable), or other required authority before submitting work.

Acceptable Use

  • Do not attempt to disrupt, overload, scrape aggressively, or interfere with the service.
  • Do not attempt to circumvent security, consent, or advertising controls.
  • Do not use CiteLite for any unlawful purpose or to violate academic integrity rules.
  • Do not misrepresent CiteLite-generated text as human-written scholarship beyond ordinary citation drafting.

Advertising

CiteLite may display third-party advertisements, including Google AdSense units, on pages that include publisher content. Ads are not an endorsement of any advertiser. Your interactions with ads are governed by the advertiser's terms and privacy practices in addition to our Privacy Policy.

Intellectual Property

The CiteLite name, design, software, and original educational content are the property of the site operator and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may use generated bibliographic citations for your own work. Factual bibliographic data is not subject to copyright; our original guide text may not be republished wholesale without permission.

Third-Party Services

Features such as URL metadata lookup may call third-party APIs. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or policies of those services. Links to external sites are provided for convenience only.

Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT CITATIONS WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR SECURE.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, CiteLite and its operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of grades, academic standing, profits, or data, arising from your use of the service—including citation errors—even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the site operator from claims arising out of your misuse of the service or violation of these Terms.

Changes to These Terms

We may revise these Terms at any time by posting an updated version on this page. Continued use after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
